On Their Own: Britain's child migrants |
From the 1860s, more than 100,000 children were sent from Britain to Canada, Australia and other Commonwealth countries through child migration schemes. They were sent by charitable and religious organisations, with government support, in the belief that their lives would improve, and that they would provide much-needed labour and increase the population. Few were orphans; many came from families who were unable to care for them. The lives of these children changed dramatically and fortunes varied. Some succeeded in creating new futures. Others suffered lonely, brutal childhoods. All experienced disruption and separation from family and homeland. Child migration schemes received criticism from the outset, yet continued until the 1960s. Formal apologies were made by the Australian Government in 2009 and the British Government in 2010 but many former child migrants and their families are still coming to terms with their experiences. A collaboration between the Australian National Maritime Museum and National Museums Liverpool, UK. |

Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) Tour |
As the super stage of Australian sport, the Melbourne Cricket Ground is an unforgettable experience. Traditionally the MCG has provided live drama to thrill millions worldwide… memorable events such as the Olympic Games, Test cricket and Australian football’s incomparable Grand Final on the last Saturday in September. But backstage, the MCG Tour gives the visitor the opportunity to relive their great sporting memories through a comprehensive tour of this marvellous stadium, where so many champions of yesterday and today have performed. A fully accredited sports heritage complex and tourism destination, visitors can view the inner sanctum changerooms, famous Long Room, coaches boxes and even walk on the arena (subject to availability). See all this and more on an MCG Tour! MCG Tours, which take approximately one hour and includes a tour guide, depart regularly from Gate 3 on all non-event days from 10am-3pm (except Christmas Day and Good Friday). Bookings are not essential. Our new themed tours commence on Wednesday April 27, 2011 and aim to provide insights into special topics that relate to particular collections and places around the stadium. The themed tours run at 12noon on days when they are offered. Groups may choose to book them at a date and time that suits them by calling +61 3 9657 8879. Our first themed tour is called MCG, Sport and War (Wednesdays at noon, starting April 27). This tour takes visitors through the National Sports Museum and Melbourne Cricket Club Museum exploring historical artefacts like evidence of the American Air Force occupation of the MCG in WWII, the Blackham Ball used as a fundraiser for returned servicemen after WWI, and a replica Victoria Cross awarded posthumously to Flight Lt William Newton. The tour also explores parts of the ground where memorials and plaques recognise the story of the MCG, Sport and War. |
