Science Meets Ned Kelly

On 11 November 2009, Mr Tom Baxter handed a human skull to the Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine (VIFM). This skull had come into his possession following its theft from the Old Melbourne Gaol where it had been on display since 1972 as the skull of Edward (Ned) Kelly. Ned Kelly had been executed in 1880 for the murder of one of three policemen killed by his gang at Stringybark Creek in October 1878. At the same time, housed in VIFM’s mortuary, were the remains of executed prisoners exhumed from the former Pentridge Prison. They had been exhumed as the prison had been sold and was being developed as a housing estate, Pentridge Village. The exhumation licence required that the remains be re-interred at Pentridge Village in an area set aside as a memorial rose garden. The exhumations included three mass graves where skeletal remains had been interred having been transferred from the Old Melbourne Gaol in 1929 when this Gaol was being decommissioned. This presentation pieces together the identification of the remains of Ned Kelly, an investigation that required contribution from history, law, medicine and science. Making the presentation will be Professor Stephen Cordner and Ms Fiona Leahy. Stephen is the Professor of Forensic Medicine at Monash University and Director of the Victoria Institute of Forensic Medicine. Human identification is a core concern for forensic medicine. This plays out daily in the domestic work of the Institute, but importantly also in the newer domain of the discipline working in contexts following war or international violence. Fiona is the Senior Medico-Legal Advisor at the VIFM. She provides advice on legal and ethical issues concerning the operation of the Institute and manages the VIFM Research Ethics Committee. During the Ned Kelly project, Fiona – perhaps to the horror of the Royal Historical Society of Victoria – tried her hand at historical research.

Enchanted Dome: the Library and imagination exhibition

The State Library’s domed La Trobe Reading Room is a Melbourne icon, a space that has inspired writers and artists since it opened on 14 November 1912. This exhibition celebrates the Dome’s 100th anniversary, featuring representations of the Dome in art and literature from the 1950s to today. They include prints by Marco Luccio, paintings by Louise Forthun, cartoons by Oslo Davis and Barry Dickins, and photographs by John Gollings and Mark Strizic. Writers represented include Ray Lawler, Shane Maloney and Arnold Zable. Architect Peter McIntyre described the Dome as a ‘magical hidden place’. This idea resonates through this display, from Cernak’s whimsical ink drawings to Rick Amor’s brooding canvas of the Dome at night and Helen Garner’s unforgettable description of the reading room in Monkey grip.

Alerting all historians

The Office of Geographic Names manages VICNAMES - the state’s official Register of Geographic Names. We are seeking to increase and improve the historical information on Victorian place names in the register. Anyone can add historical information and provide future generations with information about why and how a name may have been chosen for any Victorian place. The information will be validated by historical content administrators before becoming publicly available. VICNAMES contains more than 200,000 place names including cities, towns, suburbs, regions, roads, landscape features, recreational reserves, transport stations, schools, hospitals, national parks, forests, reserves and tracks. It is free to search place names and add historical information. Go to http://www.dse.vic.gov.au/namingplaces > vicnames to begin.
